Say Something Special With Fresh Flowers
Article by Art Jones
No matter the occasion, receiving a gift of fresh flowers is always a special treat. A tall vase filled with fragrant blooms can do more than merely brighten an uneventful day; it can lift a sullen mood, acknowledge a milestone, or even mark the passage of time. Fresh cut flowers are a helpful communication vehicle; they deliver expressions of emotion that words sometimes fail to convey.
Varying colors of the beloved rose can be used to deliver special sentiments. Yellow roses are considered a sign of friendship, while the red rose signifies intimate affection. White roses stand for unity and solidarity, and the deep, dark red or black rose symbolizes change and transformation. Boxed, arranged, or standing tall in a crystal-clear vase, a gift of roses in any color sends a heartfelt, meaningful message.
Sending flowers as gifts can be equally rewarding for both the sender and the recipient. When personal delivery is either impractical or impossible, let the universal language of flowers say Happy Birthday to a spouse, commiserate with a friend, oroffer an apology to a sibling. While events and special occasions are always appropriate times to send arrangements, consider the unconventional reasons, as well. Initiate a friendly, whimsical gesture with a bouquet of orange lilies and peach roses. Or, for a more regal presentation, say thank you by combining blue hydrangeas with purple irises. Acknowledge the onset of springtime with a bouquet of Gerbera daises, or announce the first day of summer with short stems of pink peonies and red carnations. Any time is always a good time to send a gift of flowers.
Make the meaning last by extending the life of arranged or cut blooms. Flower stems thrive best in tepid water treated with a mild flower preservative. Changing the water, daily, and mixing it with either a preservative supplied by the florist or a homemade solution of two tablespoons each of vinegar and sugar will inhibit bacterial growth in the water and extend the longevity of the flowers.
Hydrangeas, roses and baby’s breath can often be dried and saved for use as permanent home accents. Once a fresh arrangement of these flowers is no longer viable, remove them from their water source, carefully drying the stems. Gather them together to make a bouquet, and hang them, upside down, in a dark cellar or dry closet. When fully dried, they can then be used to craft wreaths, sprays or table arrangements. A little ingenuity can go a long way toward preserving both the memory, and sentiment, of an original, fresh, floral gift.
