Article by Katie McTiernan
The cooler fall air is crackling with energy and that holiday that’s all about spooky fun is around the corner – time to throw a Halloween party! You’ll whip out the orange and black streamers and balloons and play the “Monster Mash” for all of your friends – or, will you? Let’s face it; you don’t want your party to be just another boring snoozefest. What you need are some creative Halloween party ideas!I’ve hosted tons of Halloween parties and attended even more. All the while, I’ve kept notes of really great Halloween party ideas – ways to really kick it up a notch and make a party special and memorable. These are easy and fun ways to make your party great – you don’t need to become the next Martha Stewart to pull these ideas off.Halloween Party Ideas – A to H (for Halloween)Halloween Party Ideas – A is for AbracadabraAdd some magic to your evening by buying and learning a few magic tricks! This is a great “station” to set up at your party – people love to learn how to do something cool. Card tricks are always a crowd-pleaser and there are tons of easy card tricks out there that even small children can learn. Another favorite is Tarot Cards – buy a pack, read the instructions, and let the future unveil itself to you and your guests…Halloween Party Ideas – B is for BooThis is a great and easy spooky decoration to add to your haunting. Get some sheer white inexpensive fabric at a fabric store and a pair of fabric scissors (don’t use your usual scissors – they will shred the fabric too much). You’ll also need a marker and some tacks. Spread the fabric on the floor and draw a ghost on the fabric with its arms up in the air (don’t bother with its lower half; act as if it’s cut off at the “waist”). Using the fabric scissors, cut out your ghost (don’t forget the eyes and mouth). Hang the ghost from a doorway or entry area using the tacks so it hangs upside down to greet your guests. Boo!Halloween Party Ideas – C is for CauldronMost people immediately think of the dry ice fog when they think of a cauldron at a Halloween party, but the problem is that dry ice is hazardous (you can permanently burn yourself very easily) and hard to work with. An easier, but still very cool effect is to get a large black pot or plastic black cauldron, fill the bottom with green plastic glow sticks (snap/crack to light), and then top them with green cellophane. Wad the green cellophane into balls and then cover with another layer of cellophane to look like the surface of the glowing “liquid”. Place the cauldron in a dark corner or room for the spookiest green glow. Halloween Party Ideas – D is for DevilIf your crowd isn’t big on wearing costumes, why not make your party’s theme “A Night in Hell”? Decorate your home with lots of red, replace your regular light bulbs with red ones to create a demonic glow, play music with a devilish theme, and give everyone red horns to wear when they arrive!Halloween Party Ideas – E is for ElegantWhenever I think of Halloween, I think of a haunted house, and nothing is adds that spooky factor faster than elegant antiques or antique knock-offs. Getting anything that looks like its very old – like an old wizened mirror or a silver tray – can add to your haunted theme. Playing harpsichord or organ music can add a spooky element as well. Drape everything with fake spider webs, and you’re good to go.Halloween Party Ideas – F is for Freaky FoodYou don’t need to have great Halloween recipes in order to make your food Halloween-themed. All you need is food coloring! Add some freaky colors to your food using green, red, blue and black food coloring, and you’ve got a great Halloween-themed buffet. Halloween Party Ideas – G is for Ghostly GlowTurn off those glaring overhead lights and bright bulbs – you want the night to be lit with an eerie light for your party. There are tons of ways to add a ghostly glow including orange Christmas lights, candles in ornate candelabra, Halloween-themed votive holders, and of course, jack-o-lanterns. A strobe light or a black light are great special effects – select one room to feature these and, if you get the black light, break out the black light-responsive paints and other black-light items (there are tons to choose from) to fully capture its mystical effect.Halloween Party Ideas – H is for Horror MovieOne thing people rarely think of is their television at their party. They let it sit ignored, when it could be playing horror movies (with the sound off) during your Halloween party and adding that extra element of fun. Play classics like Halloween and Frankenstein as well as awesome new Halloween-themed movies like Trick R Treat all night long.Other Halloween Party Ideas and TipsHere are some other ideas and tips I’ve found to be essential for a great Halloween party:
Send out fun invitations that are on-theme and creative. If you’re hosting a Mad Scientist Party, send the invite in a test tube! If you’re hosting a haunted party, send the invite in a miniature coffin!Requiring costumes is always a good idea – it brings out the wild side of even the quietest wallflower. Create a creative playlist of Halloween music as well as current hits. Whatever you do, either skip the “Monster Mash” or play it when the party’s gotten so loud, no one can hear it. That is one Halloween song that has been horribly overplayed – let it Rest in Peace! With these creative and easy ideas, your next Halloween party will be your best yet!
