The first decision in wrapping a dessert must deal with how far this gift must travel. For gifts to be delivered close to home, you can wrap and decorate with all of the bells and whistles! Some of my gift wrapping tips are as follows

Cookies and muffins can be wrapped up in a basket, using nice cloth napkins on the bottom and the other napkin gently tucked over the baked items. Add a bow and gift tag!

Cookies and muffins can be individually wrapped in plastic wrap by placing the cupcake or stack of several cookies in the middle of a square of plastic wrap and pulling the four corners up. Gather together and twist. Use ribbon or yarn to tie closed.

For cakes and pies, I get a cake box from the bakery at my grocery store. Then I cover the box with gift wrap paper, fabric, or felt. A little glue and some time, and you have a great box to put your cake in. Tie up with a ribbon and add a gift tag!

Cakes and pies can also be presented on an antique plate or piece of fine china. Two gifts in one! I love the antique cake stands and am always watching for unique items to use for gifts at a later date. I put my dessert on the plate and get three straws. Fold the straws into triangles, locking the ends together. Try to get them the same size. Poke the point end down into your pie or cake. Place them apart, but near the edges as they will hold up the plastic wrap without touching your dessert. When you get to the party, take off the plastic wrap, remove the straws, and smooth out the icing.

If your dessert has to go further or needs to wait for awhile, I have some suggestions for wrapping those gifts too!

For candies, cookies, and cupcakes, I keep tiny little plastic bags that I purchase at the craft store or the cake decorating store. Wrights makes them and they are perfect for small desserts. I package my gifts in these little bags, tying them closed with ribbons and place them all in a big basket with a bow. This is a beautiful centerpiece to place on a buffet table.

Step 3

If your dessert has to travel long distance, you have limited options. For this option, you must be careful as food is perishable. For this reason, I only mail dessert gifts of cookies or breads. I carefully wrap my desserts after they are cooled in plastic wrap or little food bags and tie them up with ribbons. During the hot months, I freeze the breads and pack them and the last minute. Always shipped food as quickly as possible! Overnight is very expensive, but Priority mail takes 2-3 days. The United States Post Office will stamp perishable on your package, but I am not convinced they treat the package any differently than the others. I really don’t recommend that you send dessert gifts long distance.

When do you need your pumpkins? Are you planting to harvest your pumpkins for a party on a certain day in October? Perhaps you are growing pumpkins to sale at a church fundraiser on a fall weekend. What ever your needs try to have a target date in mind when you need them. If you planted seeds very early you could possibly harvest pumpkins by mid-summer but if you waited you could harvest in September or October. Planting early is a good way to minimize insect and disease damage that will only increase towards the end of the season. The only drawback to planting early is that you may be storing your pumpkin for a few weeks, but as long as you keep them healthy on the vines you should be fine.

The region that you live in also plays an important factor regarding when to plant. You should never let your plant be in the ground so early that it faces the last frost of the season, unless you have a small green house or some other means of protecting it. Conversely, do not let your plant be in the ground so late in the season that it faces the first frost of the season. The unfortunate fact is that pumpkin and winter squash plants can not handle any kind of frost, if they experience one they will die, no matter the age of the plant. In general, northern regions of the US and Canada as well as higher elevation regions have a shorter growing season (this means there is a shorter time period between the last and first seasonal frosts). If you are growing pumpkins for large size, you would probably choose the Atlantic Giant, Prize Winner Hybrid, or Big Max varieties. Each of these are members of the C. maxima species and you can expect these varieties to harvest in 115 to 150 days. The lower end of this harvest range corresponds to smaller pumpkins, 50 lbs or less, the higher end corresponds to larger pumpkins (100 lbs and above). It would not be unreasonable to expect a competition sized pumpkin to grow on the vine for 90 or more days after pollination. If you are growing a pumpkin to enter into a weight competition, plan on planting 5 months prior to the weigh off date. For example, if the weigh off is September 28, you would start your seeds around April 28. For giant pumpkins, its best to cut them off the vine only just before the weigh off as pumpkins will begin to lose weight immediately after being separated from the vine.

If you are growing pumpkins for baking, the Musque de Provence aka Fairytale, Old Timey Field aka Indian River pie, or Long Island Cheese pumpkin varieties would be very good choices. These varieties along with the Butternut squash have very sweet, tasty, flesh and belong to the C. moschata species and will harvest in about 100 to 130 days. If the average last frost date of the season for your region is on April 14, you could plant then and harvest by mid August and have summer season pumpkin goodies and maybe some seasoned, roasted pumpkin seeds. The varieties of this species tend to be exceptionally good keepers so if you wanted to plant early and minimize insect and disease damage and still have fresh pumpkin to cook with in November or December. Members of this species have a very good resistance to insect and disease damage and so planting later in the season when these are at the worst would not be unreasonable.

You may also choose to grow New England Sugar pie or Mystic pie pumpkins, also sweet flesh for baking, and expect to harvest in 80 to 90 days. These varieties in general will grow to around 5 lbs and are members of the C. pepo species.

Before planting, it’s necessary to study the region where you will be growing. Be sure to research what is the average last and first frost dates of the season so you may plan your planting time accordingly. Also knowing what varieties you will be planting as well as when you intend to harvest will be helpful in timing this. Plant to harvest at a specific date but realize that planting early (harvesting early relative to when you need the pumpkins) will leave you needing to store your pumpkins for a while, and that planting late (harvesting just as you will need your pumpkins) will mean you likely have to contend with your vines facing an increase in exposure to harmful insects and disease that is prevalent beginning in late August and extending throughout the end of the season.
