Summer Party Stuffs

When I planned my wedding in  a castle in Switzerland, I was all excited.  The law in Switzerland states that you first have to get married civilly or your church wedding won’t count as legal.  We had chosen our honeymoon destination Mauritius in the beautiful Indian Ocean.  Our civil wedding was only going to take place inside the civil office in Arosa.  Then we found out that we could also get married in Mauritius.

We contacted our travel agent who booked the wedding package for us. We found out by planning our wedding on the beautiful island of Mauritius, we would get a hotel discount and cheaper airfare.  That saved us just about 1000 dollars.  Then we booked the wedding and were told which documents we had to bring along.  The base package cost us 800 dollars.  That included the wedding ceremony and all the documentation and registration in Switzerland and a romantic dinner.

After we had arrived at Mauritius, we were met by our wedding coordinator.  We added a few services to our wedding such as wedding cake, a few flowers, hair and make up and a photographer.  That cost as approximately another 600 dollars.  So, if I deduct the wedding discount from the hotel and airline and add our cost of the wedding, we  only paid about 400 dollars additionally.

The coordination of the wedding deserved five stars.  We stayed at the LaPiroque Hotel.  The hairdresser did a fantastic job with the hair and make-up for only 80 dollars.  I had ordered my wedding dress from China which cost me inluding shipping only about 120 dollars.  We married in the hotel garden.  We were surrounded by beautiful flowers and gave each other the promise of love until eternity inside a beautiful white gazebo.  The photographer took plently of pictures that were very successful pictures.  He knew how to catch the light and bring the best out of every picture.  Our dinner was the best food ever.

This was really the most romantic moment.  After returning to Switzerland we got married with our friends and family present.  It was certainly fun but could not be compared with our romantic island wedding in Mauritius.  There is nothing more special than to celebrate this moment with just the person who you love.  It is just your day.

Origins of the Costume Party
A costume party takes its origins from the masquerade balls which started during the 15 century in Europe. They were held for varied reasons and usually started off with the endless procession of guests making their entrance and properly presented to the gathering. There was always a reason to celebrate and to hold festivities especially in Venice as it became associated with the holding of their Venetian Carnival tradition. The holding of a masquerade ball in Venice died down along with the fall of the Venetian Republic.    

Nevertheless, masquerade balls remained popular in other European countries throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. They took to masquerading more seriously hence, the masquerade ball slowly transformed into a costume party as guests made more efforts to be unrecognizable. This was inspired by games held during the celebration, as guests tried to guess the identity behind the costume and the mask.

However, this also led to the occurrence of murders during masquerade balls, where assassins took advantage of their hidden identities. The most popular and celebrated at that time was the death of King Gustav III of Sweden. Soon enough, novelists like Edgar Allan Poe, found the masquerade balls as good material for his short stories. The behavior and the colorful stories that emanated from these festivities made it interesting enough to inspire, literary settings, plays, operas and short stories.  

It came to a point when certain groups of people formed an alliance to wage war against the holding of masquerade balls. They implored upon authorities to take certain measure against the holding of this traditional masquerade balls. It was fast becoming a great contributor to immorality in the society. This then signaled the waning desire to be a part of the revelries in the olden day style of a costume party.      

Present Day Costume Party
In the U.S. today, a costume party is associated with the annual Halloween’s Eve celebration. The young generation had their fun trick or treating while the older ones including the teenagers had their fun via the holding of a costume party. Halloween’s Eve celebrations became the favorite for movie settings in horror thrillers.       

Hollywood also celebrates by way of costume party for their movie openings or book launchings especially if the movie or book is of a science fiction theme or fantasy setting. In New Orleans, costume party events are still popular in celebration of carnivals like the Mardi Gras. These are also celebrated in the same manner by the Caribbean nations.

In the UK, costume parties remain popular all year round and are called by the Britons as a fancy dress party. The British Royal Family is said to be the number one celebrants of the fancy dress party or costume party even to this date. Invitations.  I used simple white cardstock, stamped a ballerina in black and coloured some accents in pink for the front of the invitation.  Inside, we asked that the party guests come dressed as a ballerina.

Cake.  I made a simple round cake with pink fondant and gathered tulle around it to make a “skirt” with a ribbon to finish it off.  I used a ballet shoes ornament as a cake topper.  It worked really well.  I also made cupcakes with pink icing and topped each cupcake with two red candies to make it look like it was a pair of ballet shoes.

Decorations.  I had a ballet barre set up and I took a picture of each of the party guests standing at the barre to include in the thank you cards.  This barre was one that my daughter already had, but it would be very easy to make a small one yourself.  I had pink curling ribbon curls here and there on the table and countertops and a crown for each girl at their place at the table, but other than that, I didn’t need to decorate, as the Christmas tree and other holiday decorations that I already had up served as the background.  

Activities.  Each child got to decorate a small candy house to represent the “land of the sweets”.  I did this by cutting out pieces of cardboard and covering them in tin foil.  On each, I put a small little house shaped from Rice Krispie treats and iced them once the kids had arrived.  Then I put bowls of different candies on the table for them to decorate.  When they were done, I sprinkled a bit of icing sugar on them for the snow.  These were a huge hit and the kids were able to take them home with them, so they doubled as part of their parting gift.  As an activity while we were waiting for parents to arrive to pick their kids up, I put on the Nutcracker music and the girls danced and twirled around.

Extras.  I had rented an animated movie of “The Nutcracker” in case there was extra time but didn’t end up needing to use it.  I found small Nutcracker ornaments that were inexpensive and I included these in the parting gifts for the girls as well.

This was a very easy party to plan and one of the most successful girl’s birthday parties I’ve done.
